Steve Crutchfield - Print Finishing and Shipping

Steve Crutchfield doesn’t use Photoshop, and has never scanned an image. But his role in our shipping and print finishing department is one of the most important in our company. It’s Steve who makes sure each print is shipped to the right photographer; and that each priceless original is returned to its rightful owner.

“At any given time, we’ll have anywhere between two and 50 prints sitting on the table, waiting for me to sort and ship them. It’s a big responsibility,” Steve said.

A West Coast Imaging staff member since the summer of 2002, Steve has become a master of trimming and packaging prints to ensure clients receive them undamaged.

“Our philosophy is to know how to handle the prints first, and speed will come later,” said Steve. “If it takes two hours to ship one print safely, that’s what I’ll do.”

A key part of training in our print finishing department involves learning how to identify damaged prints. Oftentimes, damage is sneaky, and can only be found if you view the print from an angle. Our goal is to catch any damage before the print leaves our studio, ensuring that the artist receives nothing but an exceptional print.

A native of Illinois, Steve moved to California in 1991 to pursue Youth Ministry at a church in Redding, California. He went on to study videography at Vanguard University in Costa Mesa, California.

“Growing up, I enjoyed two things: The Bible and video. So, I found a school where I could study both. My degree is in religion and communications.”

He continues his videography career after hours, video taping weddings and a wide variety of events.

“Seeing photographs every day here at West Coast Imaging has made me really critical of the quality of my video. I have a new appreciation for framing the image and perspective.”

With 95% of West Coast Imaging’s business arriving through Fedex, UPS or the US Mail, Steve performs the final quality check when he ships out each completed scan or print job. Add in the fact that many clients have us drop-ship images to multiple addresses, and it becomes clear why Steve’s job requires someone who is extremely detail oriented.

“For me, it’s easy to keep track of everything in shipping, even though there are so many details. I enjoy keeping everything in its place, and having my finger on the shipping pulse,” Steve said. “Details relax me.”
