The Archive Scan™

When ordering Exhibition Prints, we highly recommend that you request an Archive Scan™ of your film. When you request an Archive Scan™, we make an extra large scan of your film to capture enough data for future uses of your photograph. An Archive Scan™ is the key to a scan once - purpose many workflow, where you make the creative adjustments once, then use that file for all future uses. This approach assures maximum consistency and quality, every time your photograph is reproduced, and allows you to reproduce your photograph at sizes larger than the initial print size you order.

What size you need depends on your film format, the size you would like to be able to print at in the future, and the output device you choose to use (Inkjet printers require slightly more data than digital enlargers like the Chromira).

35mm

The industry standard for 35mm film is to scan at 200MB 16-bit RGB. This allows for Chromira prints at 24 x 36 and Inkjet prints at 20 x 30 prints. Larger prints are possible by interpolating more pixels - this has been standard industry procedure for nearly a decade. You can choose to exceed the industry standard by scanning larger. Scanning larger will make your prints look slightly sharper.

Medium and Large format at 4x5 or 6x7 aspect ratio

• 200MB 16-bit RGB (66MB 16-bitGreyscale) Archive Scans™ allow Chromira prints at 33x26 inches and inkjet prints at 28x22 inches.
  
  
• 400MB 16-bit RGB (133MB 16-bit Greyscale) Archive Scans™ allow Chromira prints at 48x38 inches and inkjet prints at 30x40 inches. This is a good choice if you rarely print 30x40 and don't see a need to print larger.
  
  
• 600MB 16-bit RGB (200MB 16-bit Greyscale) Archive Scans™ allow Chromira prints at 57x45 inches and inkjet prints at 48x38 inches. This has been the industry standard for medium and large format for nearly a decade. Large prints can be made from a 300 MB scan with a small amount of interpolation and no visible degradation of quality. You can choose to exceed the industry standard by scanning larger. Scanning larger will make your prints look slightly sharper.
